Our Story

More than a cleanup.

I've been incredibly lucky to experience some of South Africa's most beautiful marine environments. As a marine scientist, I've also had the privilege of studying these ecosystems and seeing just how important they really are.

But during almost every swim, I'd find myself collecting the same things: fishing line tangled around kelp, plastic bottles, food wrappers, bottle lids, bread clips, straws and countless small pieces of plastic. As I was already swimming, why not try and leave the ocean a little cleaner than I found it?

So I started intentionally looking for and taking rubbish home after every swim. Soon, my friends started to join me. Then strangers. Before long, what started as a personal habit grew into a community of people who care for their ocean.

About Me

Founder of Swim for Trash

Hi! I’m Zara, the founder of Swim for Trash. I’m a marine scientist and all-around ocean-obsessed gal who started leaving every dive with a costume stuffed with plastic. What began as a solo habit quickly grew into a community of ocean lovers taking action together. Come swim with us! 🐠
